Did you cry in astronaut training? and other dumb questions put to Sally Ride

Save

In 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. But before that giant leap for womankind came the inevitable inane questions – would she, for example, require her own bathroom on the shuttle, and what kind of make-up did she plan to take into space? In this interview from 1983, given new life in a playful animation, the pioneering astronaut answers questions from the feminist activist and journalist Gloria Steinem about the hurdles Ride faced in reaching outer space, her uneasiness with press attention, and how her intensive training allowed her to ‘overcome being overcome’ when it was finally time to take off.
