I’d like to believe this essay is parody but, unfortunately, I think Zangwill wants to be taken seriously. Others have already pointed out the numerous problems with this piece. But I was surprised to see he mentioned my name and my work to support his argument. So let me set the record straight. First, Zangwill claims that I am an “enthusiastic advocate for the sophistication of the minds of domesticated animals…”. In doing so he suggests that the numerous peer-reviewed papers I’ve written on cognition in farmed animals are advocacy pieces that reflect my personal opinion about the “minds of domesticated animals”. I was disappointed to see Aeon giving a voice to pseudoscience, which is what EMDR clearly is. There is no empirical evidence from well-controlled studies that it has any effect beyond a placebo.
