John Cornwell is director of the Science & Human Dimension Project at Jesus College, Cambridge. His writing has been published in the Sunday Times Magazine, New Scientist and Nature, among others, and he is the author of more than 20 books, the latest of which is The Dark Box: A Secret History of Confession (2014).
