A ‘virtual outing’ on Google Maps reveals a treasured image from Diego’s past

Save

Afraid of flying, the Buenos Aires-based graphic designer and filmmaker Diego Berakha uses Google Maps to travel to far-flung places he’ll likely never visit and to return to familiar locations from his childhood in Spain. In the short film Now I Know Where to Find You, Berakha gives viewers a tour of the places he frequents from the comfort of his computer chair. Describing how the app allows him to travel in both space and time, he recalls being raised by his beloved ‘Yaya’ – a grandmother by bond, if not by blood – before leading viewers to one last, unforgettable image, trapped in the amber of time. Composed almost entirely of Google Maps imagery, Berakha’s work is both a cleverly constructed and unusually moving piece of personal filmmaking.
